Do Not Fold, Spindle or Mutilate

Now there’s a phrase you don’t hear anymore. Before there were SSD drives, flash or thumb memory, hard drives or even tape, cassettes or floppies, there were punch cards.  IBM made a gazillion of them.

Cons: It took hundreds and hundreds of these cards to create a few seconds of a program. And as long as there were absolutely no mistakes on any of the cards [shades of the "hanging chad"], you could use the program over and over just by stacking and running the stack through your card reader.
Pros:  Before punch cards and card readers, you manually typed the programming code on a keyboard, line-by-line, and entered it into the computer.  If you didn't make any mistakes, it ran. If you did make a mistake or if the power was interrupted or you turned off the computer ... No Go ... no program ... start over.  :-(

Today

Today is Leif Erikson Day, a day to celebrate that famous Norwegian who set foot in North America nearly 500 years before Columbus sailed the ocean blue.  According to the Sagas of Icelanders, he established a Norse settlement at Vinland, on the northern tip of Newfoundland in modern-day Canada.   Who can ever forget his famous chant, “Hinga-Dinga-Dorgin!”  And who can ever forget his infamous dad, Erik the Red.  Erik was born in Norway, discovered Greenland, and fathered Leif. Erik was banished from Norway for manslaughter.  After moving to Iceland with his family, the Icelanders sentenced Erik to exile due to “some killings” there in 982 AD.

In his honor and as a toast to son Leif Erikson’s 1044th birthday,  Skål!
